there are tons of things we all like and dislike about various castlevania games, and ive been talking with people about the different approaches of the games when it comes to gameplay or story. if you were making a castelvania game, what would you try? would you adapt it to 3d? change the format entirely? what game elements do you like (collecting shards, shop system, etc) and what ones do you not like, would change, or perhaps what would you add?
this is for all sorts of theory crafting and speculating, i just want to see what kinds of ideas people have. i know ive pitched my castlevania fan game before so :]
edit: additionally, you can suggest gameplay changes on existing games if you like, or things you might add.

Lots of story focus! My favorite part :3 I don't think I'd want to move it to 3D, I just like sprites best. I tend to like having a bunch of varied collectables and stuff like the Souls so I would definitely keep that, with some kind of grind-reductions in place. I think I'd also want Bloodstained's cooking system since it's so fun (I would add in cooking minigames though), and OOE's approach to quests...
I think I just really like the DSvania approach to Castlevania so it would probably be another game similar to that.

OK SO I KEEP FORGETTING TO RESPOND TO THIS BUT. I had a dream once about a Castlevania game that was sort of a split level thing, with an upper path that's normal and a lower path that's submerged underwater (oh, how cool this would have been on the DS...) Rather than choosing which one to take a la Rondo, you actually control two characters: Alucard on the upper path, and on the bottom is Jordan Belmont, who is half mermaid (like the stereotypical fantasy mermaid I mean, not. not Castlevania mermen lol). You can switch back and forth between them and would sometimes have to use one character to help the other by doing things like flipping a switch to open a door or whatever, sort of like Portal 2 co-op type puzzle thing. Also at certain points there are holes in the floor from which Jordan can pop up into the upper level, which I remember sometimes scared the shit out of poor Alucard lmao. This way you could do things like exchange items between characters or just have them talk to each other. This was a weirdly fully formed concept for a dream and frankly I think it fucking rules and I would love to see it made in real life :3 Also, here's my artist's rendition of Jordan. I believe he was Richter's grandson or something? And I think he knew Alucard since he was young. Aside from that... I would want to make a classic turn-based RPG style remake of Castlevania 3, where all four protagonists are in the party at once, and there's more fleshed out dialogue and interactive environments. After all, they've already got the perfect RPG party: Fighter, caster, rogue, and Weird Plot-Relevant Guy With Niche Mechanics. Ostensibly this is definitely possible to make using RPG Maker, but actually doing so would require a. a LOT of time and effort and dedication, something I famously lack and b. an actual copy of RPG Maker (I had RPGMXP back in the day but I don't think I still have the disc) or some other software. So yknow. For now it remains a dream

A DSvania (not physically, just controls and design) with Juste Belmont. I love Harmony of Dissonance, but it would be cool if Juste had some more use since HoD has some problems with its layout. Here's my idea. He would be faster and wouldn't have shoulder dashing, just backdashing. Shoulder dashing is only useful in HoD since you go so slow and can dash so much. Y would be used for the whip, with more stones than the few in HoD. B would jump with similar physics to DSvanias. A would be used for "Crash Spells." Which would work like the magic in HoD but without the subweapons. Some of the ones from HoD would be isolated from the subweapons. some subweapons would get new crashes, and new standalone crashes would be made. X would be used to cast basic spells, which would be akin to some PoR spells and CV3 spells in that they would be decently powerful but not completely draining like crash spells, and easier to use. Up + Y would be used for "hunter skills" which are just subweapons. Up+A would be spell-fusion. There would be books for each element (Ice, Fire, Lightning, Wind, Light, Dark) as well as the Summoning Tome. Each book would have a default crash and combinations with each subweapon (far-fetched but it would be cool.) You would find the spells and subweapons around the castle and sometimes as drops, but the spells and subweapons would be integral to exploration. Like you might need a fire knife to cut a spider's nest, or ice crash to freeze a lake. This might make it so you can sequence break with luck or finding secrets. R would be used to trigger over time and toggle spells, like guardian souls or back glyphs.
The castle's gimmick would be that it's owned by a religion that worships Death instead of Dracula. Death is sort of Juste's nemesis, and seeing him powered up by cultists would be interesting. Cipher's Charm would be given it's own slot but you would need to power it up by collecting normal books, some hidden, some as drops. These books replace the furniture in the first game, and Juste gets a library with A SAVE POINT (why wasn't there one in the secret room in HoD...) and each book would give a bit of lore or just an interesting story (obviously out of reason but I'm a TES fan so don't blame me.) Collection all the books would add an extra part to the ending cutscene where Juste reads for a bit.
Death would be the final boss and to get the true ending you just need all the spellbooks and subweapons, which wouldn't be hard to get through normal play, just that they could be gotten earlier by finding secrets. Instead of the Castle crumbling Juste, Lydie, and Maxim just move in. In the other endings Juste would either fail to remember his strength, wit, or both depending on which you forgot.
